Montserrat is a unique mountain in the world. It’s spectacular from a geological point of view, but also because there is a thousand-year-old Benedictine monastery. The monks of the monastery dedicate their lives to working and praying, and they take care of the Sanctuary and Our Lady of Montserrat, the Moreneta.
Since medieval times, the sanctuary of Montserrat has been very important from the point of view of pilgrimages; even knights and kings like Ferdinand and Isabella, the Catholic Kings, came to adore the virgin.
During World War II, Montserrat was visited by Heinrich Himmler, commander of the SS, during one of the Nazi expeditions in search of religious and magical objects that could help the Reich win the war. Based on Parsifal, Wagner’s opera, Himmler was sure that the Holy Grail was hidden in the mountain. The monks never revealed any secrets to the unwelcome visitor.
