Serra Cafema is one of Africa's most remote and hidden destinations. Surrounded by the lunar landscape of the Hartmann valley, it is like an oasis on the banks of the river Kunene, very close to the home of the Himba people, one of the continent's last nomadic tribes.
Once at Serra Cafema, you can't miss a quad-biking route through the desert dunes and meeting the women of the Himba tribe, which are the only indigenous group in Namibia who have preserved their centuries-old lifestyle.
The Himba are semi-nomadic and dedicate most of their time to rearing lifestock. To protect their bodies from the searing desert sun, Himba women smear themselves with a mixture of ochre, grease and herbs and this is what gives their skin its characteristic reddish colour.
