Some think of Maldives as only a beach destination, a place to relax and enjoy slow life in paradise. Nothing could be further from the truth! Because Maldives, the new Maldives, goes a step beyond, leaving behind the romantic and honeymoon stereotypes.
Nowadays, there are many more options. There is a Maldives for everyone!
During my second visit to the archipelago, I had the opportunity to visit three different islands and three completely different resorts.
My first stop was an island enclosed in the atoll located in the south of the country, that is, the furthest from Male, the capital, and therefore the most remote.
The southern islands are usually larger, with lush vegetation, a place where cycling and trekking in the jungle is very exciting. It’s like becoming an explorer!
Shangri-La Villingili has the largest golf course in the country, which makes it very attractive for the fans of this sport. As a curious fact, there you can find the highest mountain in the country, which is 5.1 meters high.
The offer is wide and varied: daily activities, tennis court, badminton court, football field where guests occasionally play matches against the staff, etc.
The water sports offer is extensive, but snorkelling deserves a special mention. The house reef of the island is a real wonder; a vast coral reef where time seems to stop and where you can admire a spectacular amount of marine life.
Navigating is one of the musts. The Maldivian sea is well-known for being one of the favourite places for the most adorable creatures of the ocean: the dolphins.
Watching them in the wild, playing with each other, navigating at your own pace and listening to their incredible sounds is a beautiful experience.
The experience can be very different depending on the size of the boat and the number of people onboard, so the best is to ask for the experts’ advice, that is BRU&BRU; we are real ambassadors of the Maldives.
Our journey continued with a different Maldivian concept, something of a revolution in the hotel scene. I’m talking about Finolhu and its Beach Club Heaven concept, where music, cocktails and chilling play an important role. It’s where Ibiza meets true paradise.
World-renowned Dj’s, night shows and refined gastronomy together with a fashionable style, this is how Finolhu creates a new version of Maldives. It’s ideal for groups of friends, couples looking for a trendy atmosphere and people who enjoy partying.
And finally, I couldn’t leave Maldives without visiting a more “traditional” resort. I had the pleasure of enjoying the last days in one of the most romantic hotels that one can imagine: Huvafen Fushi.
It’s only 35 minutes by speedboat from Male, which makes it very convenient and comfortable. The island is beautiful and small, and there, every detail counts.
This hotel was a pioneer in positioning itself as the most luxurious hotel in the archipelago, as it was the first to offer a pool in all its villas, as well as a private butler.
The villas are a true delight. Although the hotel isn’t new, they have managed to preserve its essence adapting it to the present, making it really cozy.
The cuisine is of the highest quality, all the restaurants are à la carte and most of the ingredients are local.
Huvafen Fushi is an intimate place for those who seek the luxury and exclusivity of a small island with excellent service. Definitely one of my favourite properties in Maldives.
A place to fall in love again…
